Most often it’s roommates who stake out a territory—physical and metaphysical—and wage a quiet war from there against everything. This room is their territory. They have retreated from life at Wellington, and this is where they barricade themselves.

Nikki smiles, shakes her head as she looks around.

“You want a drink?” Diego asks without looking up.

He’s wearing Calvin Klein briefs and purple socks, nothing else. Surround-sound speakers play The White Stripes.

“Yeah, sure. Hey, isn’t the music loud?”

“The walls are soundproof because they didn’t want the washer and dryer waking kids up,” Seth replies. “Nik, check this out.”
